50% of the beneficiaries of the ‘Fisayo Ogundoro WAEC scholarship passed the exam with distinction, 80% excel in Mathematics and English
For my birthday in 2021, I organized a scholarship fund to sponsor the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam for indigent students in two selected public schools in Ibadan. On January 21, 2021, I shared a GoFundMe link on my social media platforms. I also received some cash in naira. The fund campaign ran from January 21, 2021, to February 28, 2021. At the end of the donation period, 20 students received the scholarship in 2 public secondary schools in Ibadan as opposed to the initial projection of the scholarship serving 30 students in 5 public secondary schools. My team and I did not only award the WAEC scholarship, we also got tutors to take tutorials with the students prior to the commencement of their exams.
Graciously, the WAEC results of the 20 students came out outstanding. About 50% of the students had distinction grades such as B3, B2, and A1, with 80% excelling in Mathematics and English and 60 % of the candidates passing in 5 major subjects
The outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 birthed this project. My friend Ibrahim Oredola who also served as the project manager through his Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Relifa, and his team donated food supplies to families who experienced food hardship during the first wave of the pandemic. During this donation, he discovered that in many poor families with young children between ages 15 and above, teenagers cater to the needs of their families. As a result, many of these teenagers could not go to school or even finish their education, let alone write the secondary school certificate exam – WAEC.
I believed that the best way to address this problem was to seek means that would elevate people out of poverty. This meant providing people with access to education. I believed that one educated person in a family unit could help other members of the family out of poverty. Thus, the goal of this project was to select brilliant young students between ages 15 and 18 years, who lived in the rural areas of Ibadan and are unable to finance their WAEC exams, to finance their WAEC exams.
This project would not be successful outside of those who donated their money, the amazing project coordinator – Ibrahim Oredola, the amazing tutors, volunteers like Oluwabukunmi Awosusi and Sharon Ojo for acting as mentors, and Mr. Ebuka Iloh who facilitated clinical sessions on “How to read and understand”. I am eternally grateful as I look forward to continuing this project in 2022.
